Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

A day spent with friends, a fashion show, and a movie at the Henn Theater

Last Saturday was a very busy and enjoyable day for me.

I spent all morning working on blogs and websites, and then I was out and about for the next eight hours.

The stores at Brothers Landing had their customer appreciation day and I spent a couple of hours there looking at the cars in the auto show, listening to the live band, watching the fashion show at Rumors Clothing, and taking a few snapshots.

There are two things that really caught my attention - the beautiful models in the fashion show and the hot sun pounding down on the parking lot pavement. I guess we can call it the good and the bad.

I enjoyed some time with friends before and after the show, and then I headed back into Murphy.

The next thing on my plans was to see the new Transformers movie at the Henn Theater. If you've never been there, it is an historic single-screen theater like we enjoyed when I was a kid, long before there were multiplexes. One of the real benefits is that you don't get interrupted by the sounds (and rumbles) from the neighboring movies. That's one of the distractions I never liked about multiplexes.

But, I had a couple of hours before the movie started, so I dropped in to talk to a couple of friends. One was taking a nap and I didn't want to disturb her, so I moseyed along.

The next stop was at The Artists Common gallery on Tennessee Street where I wanted to visit Betsy Bailey for a few minutes. (I have to apologize to Betsy, because I still have a habit of calling her Betsy Henn, even though she was married to John Bailey for a long time. Old habits are hard to break, even though John was one of my friends and I enjoyed working with him at Grove Enterprises.)

Mainly I wanted to tell her I hadn't forgotten about getting together with her and recording some stories about her Dad, P.J. Henn, who started the Henn Theater many years ago. I told her that I've been very busy and it may be a couple more weeks before we can get together.

In the meantime, we talked about what she was doing, and reminisced about her Dad and John. I was reminded of what an excellent photographer John was when I saw some of his photos on display in the gallery. It was a very enjoyable visit.

I mentioned that I was going to see Transformers at the Henn Theater at 4:00 and she said that she and one of her friends were going, too, but thought it started at 5:00. After a quick call to the theater, she called to inform her friend to be there an hour earlier. She'd already seen it once with her grandson, but wanted to watch it again. That's how much she enjoyed it.

We talked some more and continued our discussion on a bench near the theater until it was time for the movie. When we went in, we looked at the new alcove that shows some of the historical photos of the theater and some drawings that Betsy did of movie stars. It's a nice tribute to the history of the theater and to P.J. and Betsy, too.

One of the first things I learned about the Henn Theater, about 30 years ago, was that they had the best Cherry Cokes I've ever tasted, and they still use real Cherry syrup when making one. After being out in the sun too long earlier in the afternoon, the air-conditioned building and cold drink were very refreshing!

What can I say about the movie?

I loved it. It was full of action from end to end and I loved the computer graphics. I felt like a kid watching a great action movie and successfully suspended all my disbelief. Don't look for a review or critique about the movie from me. I was just there to enjoy it.

It was an early birthday present from my brother, David. Thanks, David!

The only bad thing I can say, and I don't think it's all that bad, was that the chair and air-conditioning in the theater were so comfortable that I nearly fell asleep before the movie was over. I managed to rouse back up, but it took some effort.

After the movie, there were a couple more errands to run and I finally made it back home just before dark.

It was a very pleasant way to spend a Saturday afternoon, and I enjoyed it.

All the best,

JD

Oh my! Cherry sodas! I haven't had one of those since I was a teenager in my hometown in Manassas, Va. I'll have to goto Henn Theater and get one. Your saturday sounds like a great fun day. Wish I could have joined in on the fun.

Good morning, Carol.

It was a great day and I really enjoyed it. I agree with you. Real cherry cokes are great - but not the ones in the cans and bottles.

Maybe we can organize a Murphy Connections movie day sometime this fall after you move here. That would be fun.

All the best,

JD
