This has been an emotional day for me. It's Mom's first birthday since she died almost a year ago. I didn't want to be alone in the house, so I left early this morning and was gone all day.
I tried to keep my mind off of this and not dwell on it, but whenever I was driving, I would return to memories of her. I thought of her when I was young and she was so active and friendly. I thought of her after she moved to Murphy and she and Dad loved living here and met great friends. Then, without warni…

Well we started another
log home restoration after finishing up in Murphy. I was so surprised after being here in June of the amount of traffic! In June there was no traffic to speak of, pretty typical. But now! It is crazy people. They are working on 421 to make it four lane and it is actually bumper to bumper, stop and go all around the major insection of 421 and 321. On top of that the college is in session. And I have…

I hear great things about Murphy. My parent's used to live in Western NC and it really is a nice place. They are considering retiring, but have not settled on a place. There are always the details of
Individual Health Insurance. I know that
Atlas Travel Insurance offers insurance while traveling, but are there places that wou…

I want to thank the owner of Murphy Connections, John Dilbeck, for a very enjoyable afternoon. John was kind enough to take the time to painstakenly explain the many questions I had about Murphy, Murphy Connections, Marketing in general and websites. I learned more in the few hours we spent together than I have many many hours of surfing for information on the web. John, you are a real asset to the community and in particular, to the local business.Your insight into business web marketing is inv…

In part one, we discussed what causes the black stains on asphalt roofs that is so often found on houses especially in the Southern United States. Now, we will discuss two of the techniques of removing the stains and why one way should be avoided.
There are generally two ways to remove Gloeocapsa Magma. Either with Sodium Hypochlorite or Sodium Hydroxide. This is where the debate begins. Some contractors use one and some use the other. So what is the difference and which is the best? Here are t…

The Vietnam Memorial Moving Wall has been in Murphy the past 4 days. Although I've seen the Vietnam Memorial in DC, my son and I went to the wall on Friday afternoon. I was very impressed with the professionalism, respect, and patriotism of the whole event. My son asked me what the wall was for and I managed to tell him it's meaning, while holding back tears. Although I don't personally know anyone who died in the war, my dad and both grandfathers served in various wars. My thoughts went to the…

Small town churches often struggle to make ends meet. However, when a church can pull off a remodel project, it creates lots of positive momentum. Even small projects like a bathroom remodel (tiling floor, installing a
Bathroom fan, or a kitchen equipment purchase (dishwasher,
Commercial deep fryer, etc.) can make a big difference.
It…

Managed to get to the Fall Festival this year! So glad we got there at 10:00...there was a lot of traffic already! Wouldn't be surprised if JCC Folk School had a record breaking attendance this year! We left at 12:30 and the line of cars waiting to get in was LLLLLOOOOOONNNNNNGGGGGGG. Anyways, great stuff this year! I saw some of the usual vendors, which is always a pleasure, but also got to see some new things. One woman, from Blairsville, makes jewelry from recycled materials such as magazines…

Hello -
I don't like spiders but I thoroughly enjoy examining and admiring their webs. The delicate works of art they create are sometimes perfectly symmetrical and other times a methodical but chaotic mess. These got me to thinking about that saying "the tangled webs we weave when we practice to deceive."
Since in the past I have already written about admitting your mistakes, trust, and being respectful and responsible, I felt the next personality trait I could discuss would be The Gray Areas…

Roof cleaning is becoming more and more popular especially in the Southeastern United States because of an airborne algae called “Gloeocapsa Magma”. It is identified by the black streaks and stains that are mainly found on the north facing side of the roof, but does spread to the entire roof eventually.
For Gloeocapsa Magma to grow, it has to have heat, moisture and a food source. The heat and moisture source is easily provided by the warm and humid Southeastern climate. The food source is main…

Yesterday, I got a chance to do something I've been wanting to do for the last few weeks, visit the new section of the River Walk that runs long the eastern edge of Murphy, NC. I've been wanting to do this ever since I saw the new brochure for the River Walk.
I took a few photos and uploaded them to a
River Walk photo album.
It's hard to believe such a beautiful trail is available for us and it…

Last Saturday was a very busy and enjoyable day for me.
I spent all morning working on blogs and websites, and then I was out and about for the next eight hours.
The stores at Brothers Landing had their customer appreciation day and I spent a couple of hours there looking at the cars in the auto show, listening to the live band, watching the fashion show at Rumors Clothing, and taking a few snapshots.
There are two things that really caught my attention - the beautiful models in the fashion s…

I must say that yesterday was such a disturbing day for me with Farrah dying and then the sudden death of Micheal Jackson. It makes you sit up and take notice of how short life really is. I say no matter what live life as if it's your last day on earth and do what makes you happy. It's amazing how fast the years fly by. One day my children were lying on my stomach in a hospital room after being taken from my womb and the next moment they are grown adults with children of their own. Sometimes I t…

A few weeks ago,
Cat Rightsell, publisher of the
Tri-State (Plus!) Shoppers Guide, invited me to submit a column about "Marketing Your Business" for publication in her print edition.
I'm sure she thought I would drag my heals and miss the deadline, but I didn't!
(grin)
So, my first column will appear in her paper's July 2009 edition.
Thank you for this opportunity, Cat.
With her permission, I posted the article to my blog on…
