Murphy NC 28906 - A growing community with small town charm

I was taking a short nap this morning when I woke up to what sounded like the rumbling of an explosion, but there was no concussion. Then, I realized the sound was moving under the house. A few things in the house shook, but there was no damage.

I went back to sleep for awhile. When I woke up, I wasn't sure if I'd dreamed it or not.

A few minutes ago, I remembered and looked it up on the Earthquake Center at the US Geological Survey.

Sure enough, there was a magnitude 3.2 earthquake at a depth of 2.9 miles located:

9 km (6 miles) ENE (69°) from Ducktown, TN
11 km (7 miles) NE (43°) from Copperhill, TN
12 km (7 miles) NE (38°) from McCaysville, GA

You can read the details of this morning's earthquake and fill in a report if you felt it (if you want to) by clicking a link at the bottom of the page.

You can see maps showing the location of the earthquake, too.

Even though it did no damage, this was the strongest earthquake I've felt in the 25 years I've lived in and around Murphy.

So, did you feel it, too? What did you think?

All the best,

JD

We didn't actually "feel" anything, but there was a "something"...then we heard a noise, at first we thought it was the heater making that noise (how could it be the heater, right? in the middle of summer?), but then we sort of "felt" it in the floor. Nothing shook. The dog wasn't upset. Very strange.
And yes, Johnnie, we had another earthquake back in the summer of 95....we lived out in Wolf Creek then, my dog started pacing 5 minutes before the house started shaking, lost some dishes during that one....

Good afternoon, Rose.

It sounds like it was stronger here than where you are. Isn't that strange?

I've heard the windows shake and the dishes rattle in the cupboards in previous earthquakes, but I don't remember anything breaking.

All the best,

JD

HAHA - I sure felt it - The whole house shook - I thought a vehicle had come off the road and hit my house. Then when I continued to hear the "ground thunder" I realized what it was. One of my kids (and I won't mention any names here ... ) woke up, asked what it was and then said "Well, did they know this was gonna happen?" lol. I told them they don't exactly have an earthquake warning system in place - lol. Another child just slept through it ... Man, to be able to sleep that soundly again ...

I have had 3 pre teen girls all weekend. I don't remember hearing anything... but with them here even if I had I would have thought it was an: argument brewing, a plot to take over the livingroom/remote or the DVD player, or a full blown argument. I had forgot how loud 3 girsl can be! They survived fine -- I need strong drugs to stop the internal shakes and the auto pilot responces, ya know... hush, don't hit your sister again, if you don't hush i am coming in there, oh crap.. what did you break/drop this time, you know you are gonna clean that up ALL by yourself, right?, did you hear me... and many more that just seem to fly out of my mouth. So a minor thing like a loud earth quake would had to have consumed the earth right under me before I heard it.... and life goes on... bump bump bump... However, this is of interest to me and I did look up the links you posted. Thank you for keeping me informed of "the happenings" while I act like a grammy.

Good morning, Jane.

Have you ever considered that it was your three granddaughters who may have set off that earthquake by being so loud all weekend?

(grin)

I thought my load of wash had gone out of balance, and then I realized I hadn't put a load in yet! LOL! Then I thought, there is something wrong with our air conditioner; but there was no air coming through the vents. My next thought was that a large piece of construction equipment was being moved down the road I live on. Wrong Again! I was still hearing a thunder type noise so, I ran out onto the porch to check on my dog and from 25' away and 10' up I could see him standing in the middle of the yard and shaking so hard that his skin looked like he was shaking water off of him. He was scared! That's when I finally realized it was an earthquake and rescued my beasty boy! It was an unusual and slightly comical morning. I slept through the previous quake and my daughter (being the thoughtful soul that she is) called to tell me I had. lol So Saturday I promptly called her and said "Was THAT an earthquake?" You can guess her response. Well Yeah!

Good evening, Kathleen.

I can see you running around trying to figure out what was happening. (grin)

It sounds like your poor doggie was having a bad morning.

I can imagine that conversation -- "Well, yeah!"

It may have been a minor earthquake, but it was the most powerful one I've ever been through, and I hope that remains true. I did not enjoy it.

All the best,

JD
